355 Tons of Packaging Waste Collected in Q1: Current Results of UKRPEC’s EcoHromada Pilot Project in Kyiv Region

Thanks to its extensive infrastructure, the UKRPEC Pilot Project successfully collected 355 tons of waste during the first quarter of 2025. These results underscore the promising outlook for the European model in Ukraine.

From January to March 2025, the Pilot Project for separate collection and recycling of packaging waste, implemented by UKRPEC in the Kyiv region, managed to collect 355 tons of valuable materials. This impressive figure represents nearly a third of the total volume collected throughout all of 2024 (1,084 tons). The stable growth in the Pilot Project’s results proves that the European model of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) can be successfully implemented in the Ukrainian context.

It’s worth noting that throughout 2024, the monthly volumes within the Pilot Project almost doubled: from 67 tons in January 2024 to 126 tons in January 2025.

Breakdown of Separate Collection Volumes in Q1 2025 (in tons):

  • January: 125.6
  • February: 98.6
  • March: 130.9

UKRPEC launched the “EcoHromada” Pilot Project in 2017 in Vyshhorod. It was subsequently scaled up to include the Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel, Kotsiubynske communities, as well as the village of Vorzel. The project’s goal is to gain practical experience in implementing EPR, determine the necessary funding levels, and evaluate the effectiveness of various approaches to communication, logistics, and interaction with local authorities.

The project is funded exclusively by UKRPEC member companies, who finance the development and operation of the infrastructure, thereby realizing the principle of producer responsibility for the entire life cycle of packaging.

Beyond successful administrative and logistical solutions, the sustained growth in collected materials would not have been possible without the active participation of community residents, who sort their household waste and support the implementation of the European model in Ukraine.
