730 tonnes of packaging in half a year: summarising the interim results of UKRPEC’s
Pilot Project in Kyiv region

This year, as part of the “EcoHromada” Pilot Project, nearly 730 tonnes of packaging waste
have been collected. Thanks to infrastructure development and public awareness efforts, the
EPR model is demonstrating its effectiveness in the Ukrainian context.

In Q1 2025, the communities collected 355,2 tonnes of packaging waste, and in Q2 – already
374,5 tonnes. The highest volume was recorded in June – almost 140 tonnes.

Among the leaders by the amount of packaging waste collected in the half-year period:

  • Vyshhorod – 230 t
  • Irpin – 191.5 t
  • Bucha – 127 t

According to a UKRPEC study, thanks to the Pilot Project, around 25% of the packaging waste
generated in Vyshhorod is already being sent for recycling. The other communities are also
demonstrating steady growth.

As of the beginning of the year, 1043 containers for separate collection had been installed in
the communities. During the half-year period, an additional 184 were installed, and the
production of 100 new ones was contracted. The largest numbers of containers are currently in
Irpin (360) and Vyshhorod (329). In total, 1227 containers are now operating in the Project
communities – 763 yellow (paper, plastic, metal) and 464 green (glass).

Alongside logistics and technical support, UKRPEC traditionally places great emphasis on
awareness-raising activities. In the first half of 2025, we held dozens of events in the Pilot
Project communities: presentations for teachers, the educational-entertainment shows
“Sortuiko,” the installation of EcoCorners in educational institutions, and participation in local
festivals and fairs.

The “EcoHromada” Pilot Project is funded exclusively by UKRPEC member companies, which
finance the creation and maintenance of the infrastructure – practically implementing the
principle of Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). The Project makes it possible to test
financing models on real examples, assess the effectiveness of communication with residents,
and explore ways of cooperation with local self-government bodies.

The “EcoHromada” Pilot Project proves that responsible management of packaging waste is
possible already today – even under challenging conditions.

The efforts of responsible businesses, professional logistics, and the environmental
awareness of Ukrainians are the foundation for a future unified national circular economy
system.
