Kyiv Region Embraces Eco-Consciousness: Five Lyceums Now Sorting Waste Through UKRPEC’s Pilot Project

In an initiative to foster environmental awareness, UKRPEC has installed two types of containers for separate waste collection in educational institutions across the Kyiv region. Students and teachers have actively participated in training sessions and educational shows, learning about the Pilot Project.

UKRPEC continues to implement a European approach to packaging waste management in educational institutions in the Kyiv region. To date, we have set up special EcoCorners with containers for separate waste collection in five lyceums within the communities involved in the “EcoHromada” Pilot Project.

As part of this initiative, UKRPEC representatives conducted training sessions for teachers, focusing on organizing separate waste collection within lyceums and the specifics of the Pilot Project’s implementation in each community. One lyceum even suggested conducting similar training for class monitors, who voluntarily offered to help implement the separate collection system.

For students, especially those in younger grades, the Coalition organized entertaining and educational “Sortuyko” shows. These events aimed to spark their interest in sorting and teach them how to properly use the EcoCorners.

Our experience collaborating with educational institutions has shown that play-based learning yields the best results. Children enthusiastically participate in the proposed activities, quickly learn, and then diligently apply the knowledge gained during quests and interactive sessions. Teachers have also shown significant interest in the Project, with some even proposing their own ideas and inspiring initiatives.

Containers have been installed both inside the lyceums and outdoors in schoolyards: yellow bins are for recyclable waste (packaging and items made of paper, plastic, polyethylene film, metal), and grey bins are for all other waste, including food scraps, used napkins, floor sweepings, etc.

Working with children is a key step towards shaping society’s ecological awareness. It’s from childhood that a responsible attitude towards packaging use, sorting, and recycling begins to form, along with a general culture of environmental care.

UKRPEC is open to collaboration with educational institutions within the Pilot Project areas. We plan to continue this important work with renewed efforts in the new academic year.

We wish all graduates success in their National Multisubject Test (NMT) and other lyceum students a fun, peaceful, and eco-conscious holiday!
