Members of The American Chamber of Commerce Familiarized with the Pilot Project of Separate Waste Collection in Kyiv Region
The participants saw how separate collection is organized in Vyshhorod, joined the discussion at the mayor’s office, and visited the sorting station “Rada”, from where the packaging is sent for further recycling.
Rostyslav Kyrychenko, Deputy Mayor of Vyshgorod, met with the tour participants and expressed his readiness to support further initiatives of the UKRPEС aimed at implementing waste management legislation and implementing public awareness campaigns.
Volodymyr Slabyi, Head of the Executive Committee of UKRPEС, said that such projects have been implemented in other settlements of Kyiv region (Bucha, Irpin, Hostomel, Vorzel, Kotsiubynske, etc.) and shared plans to increase the number of separate collection containers from 310 to 1130 by the end of the year.
At the end of the tour, the participants, companies-members of the F&B, Retail & E-commerce, and Consumer Goods Committees at the American Chamber of Commerce in Ukraine, discussed important principles that should be incorporated into packaging waste management legislation.
In particular, it is inadmissible to create a large number of different organizations with extended responsibility, which will lead to chaos in the market instead of focusing on creating a collection, sorting and recycling infrastructure. The discussion also touched upon other methods of separate collection, other than containerized collection, such as the deposit system and the operation of recycling centers. Participants emphasized the need to set realistic targets in the process of developing a separate collection system.
