UKRPEC, in cooperation with the Bucha City Council and civil society, is engaging more
residents of the Bucha territorial community in separate collection of packaging waste.

“Bucha sorts waste — you sort too!” Under this slogan, the Ukrainian Packaging &
Environmental Coalition took part in the Lokalist Festival, which took place in Bucha City
Park on July 6.

The Ukrainian Packaging & Environmental Coalition is engaging more residents in the
EcoHromada Pilot Project on separate collection of packaging waste across five consolidated
territorial communities in the Kyiv region. For the second year in a row, UKRPEC has
participated in the Lokalist summer festival in the Pryirpinnia area, where local craft businesses
and community initiatives promote and showcase their work.

At the festival, UKRPEC, together with Bucha municipal services, set up “EcoCorners” where
visitors could sort the waste they generated into three fractions using three different containers:
a green label for glass packaging waste, a yellow label for plastic, paper, and metal packaging
waste, and a grey label for residual waste.

A lecture was also delivered at the festival’s educational zone for visitors and
participants, explaining how the separate collection system for packaging waste operates in
Bucha as well as how residents can easily sort and compress packaging waste at home to
prepare it for disposal in the appropriate containers located at municipal solid waste collection
points.

As always, the UKRPEC children’s zone was extremely popular — kids and their parents
could practice proper sorting of packaging waste, and each participant received small but useful
gifts: an EcoBackpack “Carry your world without waste!”, EcoPencils “Draw your world without
waste!”, and a keychain with a QR code linking to a video on sorting rules.

The majority of festival attendees received a reminder leaflet with packaging waste
sorting rules to help them strengthen their sorting skills at home.

UKRPEC’s activities at the public event in Bucha serve as a strong example of
cooperation between the local government, civil society initiatives, and producers of packaging
and packaged goods — with the shared goal of increasing environmental awareness among
residents and involving more community members in separate collection of waste.

The Pilot Project on separate collection of packaging waste, implemented by the
Ukrainian Packaging and Ecological Coalition, is designed to build practical experience in
applying the Extended Producer Responsibility principle and to serve as a model for other
communities across Ukraine in the future. It also aims to provide data necessary for the
government to make effective decisions in packaging waste management in line with European
integration processes, as required by the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement.
